I understand the complicated nature of independence. When the country gained independence, not everyone who lived here was able to experience it. What it meant at the time is not what it means now. I can’t speak to the experience of African Americans, but as a woman, I feel that I live in a time now where I do enjoy the freedom that my forefathers fought for.
