Role in Ecosystem

Owls spend the day roosting in holes.

Behavior

They hunt mostly at dusk/night. They can locate prey by sound as well as sight.

Human Impact

Eastern screech owls provide ecological services to humans by controlling insect and rodent populations, reducing spread of disease. They do adapt well to human landscapes, but they can have risk from vehicle traffic, rat and other rodent poisoning, and habitat losses. Owls are very territorial. They are territorial because they want to protect things that matter to them like mates, eggs and hunting grounds. Anything crossing those boundaries the owl might just kill.

Creative Exploration

I wake up in my nest to hear the birds sing. Soon enough I hear my stomach growl. I was all snuggled up in my bed but now ready to ponce. I can feel the soft pine straw as i slowly move from out of my bed. I hear them again. I quickly fly from my tree hoping to see something delicious, Knowing they won’t see me. As I glide around the bright green valley I see no sign of my delicious meal. My stomach growls again. Where could this sound be coming from? I start to flap my wings faster hoping to maybe find something. Maybe I could find something in the forest near my home. I rush before the bird hides in there nest. They know it’s not safe at dark. I hear water rushing past me. I slowly stop flying to catch my breath. I see the dark circles in the water rushing. Almost like they know danger has arrived. I quickly and quietly dive in and take a big bite. Caught one I think to myself yes it’s so tasty and big. That was a very good tarpon I say. I suddenly hear the birds again. As I angry flap my wings and rush to the sound. Swishing and rushing through the trees. I see the biggest bird I as a Owl have ever seen. I slowly hover over it then. I pounce. I take it to my bed along with my leftover fish. This should provide me enough nutrients and energy I will need for the next night now back to sleep I say for another 12 hours.
