1976 Bicentennial celebration

Collection:

Prompt: Think of the stories, tradition, or activities you participate in on the Fourth of July. Describe the meaning behind these activities, including if any relate to the history of the holiday.

  • Cakes covered in cool whip icing and strawberries & blueberries in the shape of a flag

This memory is associated with the 1976 Bicentennial celebration. I just turned 13. My birthday is July 3rd and my birthday always had a particularly AM Rev celebration feel. Pool parties + handmade posters of George Washington were everywhere with streamers of R, W, & blue. I got Elton John’s cassette tape of album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and played it on new Red Take-N-Tape.

I hear that album today and I am taken back to sitting on the roof and watching the fireworks & the tall ships in the Boston harbor on TV. The music and  food was key to this memory.
