My favorite food is watermelon. At church camp when I was nine, we ate too much bean stew, followed by huge helpings of ice cream and watermelon. I got sick and didn’t touch watermelon again until I got married 18 years later. My new husband cut the watermelon at our sink, and he said, “You have to eat watermelon on an empty stomach in the morning.” In my pajamas, I ate a piece of the juicy red fruit—at first cautiously, but then drinking it down like wine. Ever since, watermelon has been my favorite way to feel the goodness of summer, but always on an empty stomach.
