Beginning just after the Benjamin E. Mays Historic Site was dedicated on Apr.26, 2011, we conceived the idea of erecting a full length, seven foot long statue of Benjamin Mays at the Historic Site. Through a dedicated fundraising project over a five year period, enough money was varsel to find the statue. The Historic Site contracted with Jon Hair of Florida to create the statue, and the dedication was held in November 2017 with a very large crowd present, to include television coverage. To date, Dr. Mays statue is the only full length statue in Greenwood county. It remains as a source of pride for the county.
