I strongly believe Aiken needs more shelters.  There is over 100 homeless people living there on the street.  Instead of using the old building we had on Main Street for an opportunity, the city decided to make a second fire station.  We already had one downtown.  I mentioned this to my high school teacher and she asked me “Well, what could you do about it?”  Our class actually had a petition to possibly give to the mayor.  I really wanted him to take my opinion in consideration.  He didn’t take my opinion in consideration at all, but in fact, he did send me a letter to let me know he acknowledged the request my class was trying to put together.  The mayor told me he didn’t have the funds to have a shelter, and after a long thought about it, I realized that could be true.  Truly there is nothing I could do at the moment, but when I’m finished with college, I want to have my own organization helping the homeless.
