Atlantic Beach, SC, was concerned out of segregation. The remnants of segregation still impact the town today. During the segregation period, the town flourished because Black people had to come there for recreation. As a result of desegregation, the Black dollars left the town. It fell into decline and disinvestment. The stigma of distressed property crime and socio-economic decline WAS prevalent. This made me feel alienated, but I am determined to revitalize the attitudes of people in and around the Space. How I navigated that space is I sought to change it and change people’s opinion of the town to a positive one.
