As a child in the lower Piedmont of South Carolina, growing up looked like white male organizations permeated the backdrops of a rural southern county. Fast forward to 2022, 2023ish and I’m happy to report some strides have been made for the great for greater diversity in community coalitions. We never celebrated Dr. MLK Day in the past and now there is a parade. No, it doesn’t attract the crowds of those lining the streets for the Christmas parade.
I have hope that in the years to come crowds will one day line the streets honoring this man who gave his life while peacefully or rating for equality and justice. We now have food pantries and one Church even offers a warming shelter for everyone.
I see we still have much to do, a far piece yet to journey for change, for the common good, for everyone in the community to still be seen and acknowledged as valued respected as equal members of the community.
