A few years ago, I designed literature, art, music, and dance thing called The Quilt Project. I worked with small group of children. And then I have also worked with the whole school on this, from everybody in every grade. I have quilt stories quilt books from all over the world.
And so we start out by reading those and listening to some music from other places and talking about how patchwork quilts are like people working together to take small pieces and make something bigger and more beautiful. And then in the end we choreograph, by a choreographer, a group dance, and it’s been so interesting to see how children respond to this. Of course they all have their own stories to tell. But they just throw themselves into this with full abandon, and that’s what I love about it.
