For me, the first language I heard and had to learn was a requirement in high school. You had to take three years of Spanish, which was interesting for me because, in my third year, I got put into Spanish honors. I don’t know why they put me in Spanish honors, but I was in Spanish, and it was a language that found very beautiful, and you had to be able to roll your r’s to know how to do certain phrases.
And so, I’m really good at the alphabet, I do some tutoring. I had to do the ah, ay, ee, oh, uu in Spanish, and my mom was listening to me, and she was like, “What are you doing?” And I said, “I’m doing the vowels.” And she said, “In Spanish?” And I was like, “No, it’s English, ah, ay, ee, oh, uu,” and she was like, “Shyanne it’s a, e, i, o, u.” And I was like, “Oh okay.” Spanish is an understanding of the world that’s different but we can learn from each other.
