Poach

Collection:

Prompt: Choose a single word or phrase from a language or dialect spoken in your home or community. What does it mean, and why is it significant to you?

Poach. That’s the single word, poach. This was the way I grew up pronouncing “porch.” It stuck because sitting on the poach, the front poach especially, was so special to me.

Saturdays at my grandmother’s house in Newberry could never compete with any other experiences I’ve had in my life. The children were always directed to go play while the adults sat there on the poach discussing the happenings of the week, yet they did not know we were underneath the house, listening to everything they said.
