Mama’s Front Porch

Collection:

Prompt: Reflect on how language in your life carries the legacy of your family or culture. What parts of that legacy do you hope to preserve or pass on?

A few years ago, before the pandemic, as we were getting ready to celebrate my mom’s 80th birthday. I asked my siblings to share a story of one of our moms saying to them, and one that they especially laughed at because it didn’t make sense. Yet later in life, it did make sense. Well, every one of her nine children provided something.

So once again, the front poach. A front porch is special to me, it’s where the family communicates. So, I put it all together in my book Front Porch Therapy, the messages from my siblings were so profound. I got the term Mama’s Front Porch Therapy trademarked.

Every year I create a Mama’s Front Porch calendar for my family with those sayings. Last year I did not do that for Christmas. However, I will be presenting it to everyone as a Mother’s Day tribute to Mom, who is 91, still in good health, in her right mind, and sharing the language of her life with every one of us on her front porch.
