When I lived in Parkwood, a master-planned community in Mt. Pleasant SC, I was a part of a movement to challenge a project planned by the school district that community members and teachers found detrimental to the area’s residents. Over the course of a year, families, community leaders, elected leaders, and town protestors worked together through avenues of one engagement towards a more fitting and for a solution suitable for all people involved.
A couple of years later the town was selected for the All-American City Award. One of the reasons is that Mt. Pleasant was chosen for the way the town resolved social issues through civic engagement. Parkwood residents were a part of that experience.
