When we moved to Greenville, SC in 1978, there was no thriving life in the downtown. Every child knew the single portion of Main Street that was safe to drive or walk down, only when accompanied by an adult, and only during daylight hours. Most of the “downtown” area was deserted, decrepit, desolate, and dangerous. The Reedy River was contaminated with years of industrial waste and residential pollution. There was almost nothing to do downtown, only one hotel to stay and eat. And then, while I was away for years living in different states, the downtown became “Downtown.” The change was amazing. Now there are many hotels, restaurants, shops, theaters, festivals, and outdoor activities that define our Downtown or working Downtown. The Reedy River is a top tourist destination…
