As a small school and church community, one of our challenges was to care for a teacher who faced financial devastation due to cancer. She and her husband had three young boys, limited family support, and limited salaries. She was very ill due to the disease itself and due to chemotherapy. We wanted to do more than just take up donations, more than a singular and forgotten gesture. As a community, a 10k and fun run was established. Unfortunately for our friend, cancer returned and she eventually succumbed. However, the 10k is still an annual event that provides support for families dealing with cancer.
