Getting Together Online

Collection:

Prompt: Even though snow is rare in South Carolina, what traditions and activities are preserved around Christmas and the Holidays?

I don’t think I have Christmas traditions like most people do. In my family, I am the oldest person now. Because my parents are gone, my grandparents are gone. And I am a great-grandmother. So I’ve lived in many, many, many places in my lifetime. And because my parents are gone, there is no place that I call home in the sense of going home for Christmas. And my children and my grandchildren are the same way. There’s no home.

So our home now we find in getting together online. With something wonderful to drink, whatever that might be for that person, and just looking at each other wherever we are in the world Christmas morning. And when I say Christmas morning, I mean about eleven. Because I am not an early morning person. And even though I’m on the East Coast, there’s nobody else now in my family who’s on the East Coast. So accommodating everybody, the people who are in Europe, in the West Coast, and the Midwest, Mexico, accommodating all those people is a challenge.

And so we’ve kind of settled this year on eleven o’clock Eastern Standard Time for our coffee, or whatever, our early-day Christmas drink. And there are eighteen of us. And so that’s a new tradition for us. Because family members have been dying. And so we’ve been trying to figure out how to sort of hold things together when we aren’t geographically close. That’s our plan for this year. In previous years, when we were closer, we got together face-to-face, but this will be something new for this year.
