My great-great-grandfather

Collection:

Prompt: Write about one of the folktales you’ve heard in the course of your life

My great-great-grandfather, my dad‘s dad before he passed, I think he had 15 children. So my grandmother went on to have I think three or four more. They were like 18 or 19 children. Lots of stories from that side of the family I can’t always keep them straight. But when that I remember is that my grandfather‘s dad was a gambling man. He was really good at it, so no one really minded. Like it wasn’t seen as such a bad thing. Whenever I hear the story, you know, you are like “oh there’s a gambling man they were irresponsible”. But I think he had to figure out how to take care of 15 children. And he’s figured it out. But I always say this, what I know, what I remember most about him is that he was killed over a card game. That he was poisoned at the game. So he got to this card table and left all these children for my great grandmother to take care of. But the way they told the story, he was never cheating. I was just told he was poisoned at this card game. I don’t have all the details of it, but it makes me want to ask for more.
