Lavinia Fisher

Collection:

Prompt: Write about a place in South Carolina (or elsewhere) that you’ve heard has folklore or legends associated with it. Describe the story tied to that place and how it impacts its significance.

When I was younger, my mom and my sister, and I took a lot of little day trips and overnight trips to Charleston, and we did a lot of the ghost tours around there. My favorite story was about the old jail that was there, and the woman who was hanged there. I think she was even the first woman that was executed in the United States. Her name was Lavinia Fisher. I don’t remember what she did exactly. I think she was the first female serial killer, and I think she also killed her husband. I don’t remember a lot of it, but you know, she was hung. She promised to haunt the place, of course, and it’s funny, I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately because, you know, they used to do tours in the jail and this whole thing, but now it’s turned into like, this fancy event space recently. I saw the people, I don’t know if anyone watches Southern Charm, but they actually they had like a gala there recently. They didn’t mention the history at all. So, I’ve just been thinking about, like, what the ghost Lavina Fisher thinks about all that.
