When I grew up in northern Virginia, near Washington DC, out in the country. There were a lot of old roads. Colonial roads, you know, what they call gullies. And so I would ride my horse in the gully and cry “The British are coming!” because I was taught myths about American history. A certain version of American history that was very patriotic. I grew up very patriotic, but now my patriotism is taking a different form. I wanted to tell an untold and under-told story from American history. So I created this character, a brown fictional character, who sees injustice around her from different periods of American history. She doesn’t speak up about it necessarily, because she’s timid. She’s like that little mouse in children’s stories. and so I’m creating stories about that. And one of the things I’m struggling with is trying to figure out how to incorporate African-American stories, Gullah stories, Cherokee stories, and so on, within my stories, but being respectful that they’re not mine to tell.
