Boogie Bottoms

Collection:

Prompt: Write about a place in South Carolina (or elsewhere) that you’ve heard has folklore or legends associated with it. Describe the story tied to that place and how it impacts its significance.

In my travels as a social worker, I was told about a place called Boogie Bottoms near King Street in Williamsburg County.

I was told creatures that preyed on people would come out at night. I was told the nights were darker than any place on Earth in Boogie Bottoms. I was told the sounds of nature from the insects was deafly, so loud you could not hear yourself think. I was told that even the vegetation in the area got thicker at night. So being in Boogie Bottoms is a place you did not want to be at night because something bad was bound to happen.

In 2000, I placed a child in an adoptive home in that area. I always planned my visits with the family and this child so that I would never be caught in the area after dark.

One early morning, around 1:00 am, I received a call from the family saying, “You better come get this child now, or something bad is going to happen to one of us.” So I was in Columbia, that was about a three-hour drive away from Boogie Bottoms.
