An Old Cemetary

Collection:

Prompt: South Carolina is home to many ghost stories and legendary creatures. What is the spookiest story or creature from your childhood or community that still gives you chills?

So, I am not originally from South Carolina. I moved down here about 15 years ago. So I grew up in the middle of nowhere in the Appalachian Mountains. My graduating class was 30, and that was the biggest class, and I was related to everybody in that class, just kind of giving some context. There was an old cemetery behind my Nana’s childhood home. It had high walls that were in the beginning stages of crumbling decay.

My nana would always tell me to never go to that cemetery because it was haunted by a soldier ghost and a little girl ghost, and bad things happened to those who saw them. Naturally, as a curious kid, I had to go investigate. The cemetery was nestled between a creek and a cornfield. It was surrounded by the mountains on all four sides because it was snugly secured in the holler. The tombstones dated back to before the Revolutionary War, and that’s all the further I got. But essentially, the myth is that if you see them, that all this bad luck would happen to you. And that property has been my family’s name for generations, from when they migrated here from Britain. So, lots of ghost stories in the mountains.
