When I get to be a composer, my work will be an amalgam of everything that I’ve absorbed from what I listen to. There will be some blues evoking the deep spirit of longing and release; there will be the plaintive hope and sorrow from the early country music I so enjoy. I love horns so the backing will be brassy with trumpet and trombone mixed with the sensuality of the alto sax. The drum parts will be an assault on the senses booming, quietly whisking the snare, pounding the tom-tom, and laying out the sweetest foundation a band could hope to ever build on. The bass will work with the drummer keeping that foundation sturdy and solid, while playing its own runs up and down the neck.
My influences that will show are the bass and drums from the Who, the trumpet in the manner of Satchmo and Miles, and the lyrics like John Prine, funny, deep , sad, sometimes all at once. The smooth slide of Duane Allman will complement the raw scratchiness of Keith Richards. The backing horns, well listen to the Tower of Power to get a preview of that sound.
This gumbo of musical styles and abilities, in my mind, create a glorious, thick, and soul-stirring thing.
