What is it about my appointment book that makes me vehemently protect my use of it, even now when we have the technology that makes its function obsolete?
I like to have my book open on my desk to scroll through it as I am on the phone to view my business vs my availability. I like the physical nature of penciling in appointments and writing notes next to each entry, like phone numbers or reminders about my appointee’s children or anniversary, or special facts I should mention at the meeting or phone call.
I enjoy the ease of crossing off, or better yet, erasing appointments when they change.
All of these excuses can be explained away by my techie friends who insist I can do all this and more on my iPhone or tablet. But … I stick to my book. Over the years my appointment book has changed from one that fit into my purse or attache easily. Now I prefer a desk-size, as I have been working from home since 2005 and most of my relationships are virtual, so I and my appointment book rarely have to leave my desk.
Each year I receive a gift of an appointment book from an advertising specialties vendor I have been doing business with for over 30 years since I began my career in marketing. He and I have been through many challenges and changes in our business lives. I look forward to the mail in December when I know I will be getting my annual gift of a non-pretentious, rather plain Weekly Executive Planner. I relish the routine of moving my already made appointments into my new calendar and I don’t really care if this labels me a “techno-dinosaur.” I just laugh to myself that YES, better a dinosaur than a techno-geek!
