The Papermill

Collection: ,

Prompt: The paper mill is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Georgetown and is no longer in use: If given the opportunity, how would you revive this local legend?

When I was driving back and forth from Charleston in my younger days as a home health nurse, then an infusion Nurse, I always felt sad when I would drive over the bridge and see the paper mill. It reminded me of the same Georgia paper mill in upstate NY where I grew up. The smell was quite unpleasant, and the site was unattractive, and I would just buzz through, getting coffee later. When I moved here, 3 years ago- everyone said “oh-you moved there?” Thinking about that scene.

One time, when I visited Raleigh, I saw a similar building that used the frame like that to build a very detailed section of a block—Hewen beneath rafters-were artiasians and art shows. Wood and glass transformed the structures. You felt you had to “go in”. My friend explained that the old mill/was revitalized and is now the heart of that area. Music, concerts, shops, places where people could eat, and have a picnic. Marketplaces and even green space.

I would love to envision driving over and to my right a glorious building showcasing Georgetown, its history, its museums, and people.
