I took a ferry to Cumberland Island in Georgia with my middle son, who was about five. Later that night, he got a fever and his skin started to peel. I panicked and called his pediatrician, a family friend, who told us to go straight to the ER. They started an IV immediately and diagnosed scarlet fever. We stayed overnight. He recovered, but I’ll never forget that beach trip.
