A Memory So Vivid

Collection:

Prompt: Reflect on a memory that continually resurfaces in your mind. What sensory details—smells, sounds, and images—anchor that memory for you, and how does it influence your creative expression? Write about the echo of that moment and its impact on your work.

A memory so vivid in my mind is the home in which my great-grandparents lived. The home had only four rooms, a sitting room, a bedroom, a kitchen, and a storage room next to the kitchen. The home was probably less than 400 square feet in size. It sat on rocks piled up to make the four corners before columns that kept it anchored to the ground.

There were long steps, which led you to the front porch, where there were chains, rocker-type chairs, and it was covered in pots of flowers. The front room, I remember the most, had a light bulb in the center of the room, which was on a cord with a pull string to turn the light off and on. There was newspaper and also magazine pages which lined the walls as wallpaper in that room, there was also a pot belly stove which kept the house very toasty.
