A Glow That Was Breaking The Darkness

Collection:

Prompt: Write about a belief, habit, or neurosis that you no longer carry. Why did you discard it? What did you replace it with?

I had to unlearn hate and anger. As a child, I remember dad and mom getting us up in the middle of the night and moving to a new place to live. I recall going to sleep, watching mom standing at the window, peeping out with a glow that was breaking the darkness I was so used to seeing. My parents didn’t say anything other than “Get your shoes on.”

We climbed into the car, went to the store owned by the man my dad worked for, and he handed my dad a key. In the middle of the night, Dad drove down this long road to a house in the middle of nowhere. He made a fire in that huge fireplace, and we slept on blankets, quilts on the floor that night in front of the fireplace. The next morning, we arose and went to a new school. No one said anything or explained why we moved, and none of us kids asked why. We only knew our lives changed overnight.

Now we are in a new school with new people and expected to continue as if nothing happened. I was angry, and I could only assume, as years went on, what the glow was about. However, I could not allow that to hinder my life, and I had to replace the anger and the hate with love and respect for others.
