Don’t Write a Check You Can’t Cash

Collection:

Prompt: Think about a moment when a parent or a guardian’s reaction actually surprised you, whether this was with kindness or discipline or something else entirely. What did you learn from it? How did you view your parent differently after that?

As a result of being in a pageant, I was asked to come work at our local Sears catalog store and my dad encouraged me to start an account at the bank. So, I opened a checking account, and I was excited when my checks came in the mail. Being brought up in the church, I knew that a part of working was giving your tithes and offerings. So, the first check I wrote was for 10% of my earnings to the church.

Well, the check bounced. My dad was a trustee, so he got the check, and he covered it. He then had a serious talk with me about how you need to always know what you have in the bank.

He said, “Did you get the book? Did you get this book with your checks? And I said, yes. He said, “Well, this is how you keep up with the money you have.”

He said, “Before you write a check, make sure you have the money in the bank.” So, to this day, I keep a check registry with my balance in it. That was a big learning to have a check bounce that you had written to the church.
