Home Remedies II Workshop

Communal Pen workshops are at the heart of what we do. Each workshop has a facilitator team and thoughtful prompts with the goal of creating community connection. Read more of our details below of this workshop.

South Carolinians are blessed with abundance in their own backyards. Grandmothers and root doctors have been making medicines from the earth for centuries. Where do you look for healing? Share the remedies and traditions from your heritage. Free registration also includes a complimentary in-person tea blending workshop on Saturday, June 1, from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. in Georgetown, SC.

This is the final workshop in a May series of virtual community writing workshops with additional opportunities for in-person, follow-up activities in locations throughout South Carolina. Under the banner of Communal Pen, in collaboration with South Carolina Arts Commission, these workshops will explore distinctly South Carolinian resources, sights, and stories, and what they mean to participants, both Bin Ya and Come Ya.

This is the second of a two-part series on home remedies. You can register for both or just one. Each of our virtual workshops is complimented with an in-person event across South Carolina.

The Athenaeum Press, CCU’s student-driven publishing lab, operates to make the phrase “Local Stories Matter” a reality. This workshop series is part of Athenaeum Press’s new collaboration with Communal Pen. Originally established by the South Carolina Arts Commission in 2010, these sessions showcase stories to explore the dynamic and ever-changing state of South Carolina. Communal Pen creates space for, amplifies, and connects unheard voices through writing workshops, curated publications, and a digital platform.

Facilitator

Jacqueline Williams, founder of Passage Products, is a Gullah herablist and author in Georgetown.
