It’s summer vacation and my
mother has granted my brother and
I permission to ride our bikes from
our suburban home development to my
Aunt’s house in the country
some 30 miles away. To tell you
the truth I don’t really know
many miles away it was, but
we wanted an adventure and
boy did we get one.
Our bikes are inflated,
our back packs stocked with water,
and away we go along neatly
organized streets, to the 2 lane
highway we have to cross to
the single lane asphalt country
roads we typically traveled in
our family car. But, today, its
just me & Jack; me on my Schwinn
1 speed coaster bike &
his with a banana seat &
Sissybar. Our aunt would be
Waiting for us with a lunch she
Prepared for us. Our Uncle would
Drive us home later in the afternoon.
The silence of the country road
was peaceful. Tall grass grew along
the side of the road, the
rising late morning sun shone upon
us & slowed me down. My
face grew flush having not ride that
distance before. We stop
for water breaks. The smell
of the grass mixing with
the sound of chirping birds.
A mole emerges from
the grass – lost & surprised
as it encounters the
hot asphalt.
We made it to our
destination overheated
& hungry, greeted by Aunt
Sue who welcomed us to
the cool shade of her
kitchen then living room.
