Southern Toad

Collection: ,

Prompt:

Anaxyrus Terrestris

Biological Overview

Habitat

It would live in urban forests

Diet

They would eat bugs and other insect

Role in Ecosystem

It would balance out the ecosystem and make sure there would be not too many bugs.

Behavior

They are terrestrial and would hunt at night.

Human Impact

We primarily hurt them through habitat changes and chemical changes. We also introduce threats by inviting in invasive species. Humans impact southern toads by destroying habitats and introducing toxic chemical runoff. These toads often live in suburban yards, making them vulnerable to lawn chemicals. Industrial waste like coal ash can reduce their survival rates by up to 85%. While some toads develop genetic tolerances to pollution, it often stunts their growth. Humans also accidentally kill them after mistaking them for invasive cane toads. To prevent declines, many states now provide them with legal protection.

Creative Exploration

I stalk my prey of flies and insects, waiting, searching, bathing in a bright unnatural light. I await for the flys and bugs to fall from the sky. I don’t even croak; afraid to move I do not dare gulp, for a single sound could blow my cover and cause me to starve for the day. So, I wait patiently till sun fall, and then retreat to my cavern at day and stay till the next night over and over
