Biological Overview

Habitat  

Isolated fresh or saltwater environments like swamp, wetlands, and marshes   

Diet  

Their diet is populations of fish, amphibians, and small mammals.  

Role in Ecosystem  

It is a top predator and a keystone species which means it’s significant to the food chain.   

Behavior  

Really patient animal and a solitary predator. When they hunt, they stand still and strike fast for their prey 

Human Impact

The great blue heron, continues to impact human activities like habitat loss, direct disturbance, and environmental. 

Creative Exploration

As the blue heron walks and stalks for its prey,   
It waits for something in the water to give way,  
A splash or a trickle, a dime or a nickel,  
Anything to stay alive for a day.   

While it makes its way to eat, 
As it tries to catch a treat, 

The blue heron bends down to get a taste, 
Of the great fish in the water,   
It snatches the tiny fish so fast,  
And splashes in the river,
