While okra itself is often described as slimy and nasty to some, it always brought a warmth and comfort to me. A memory of being back in my grandmother’s kitchen with the okra being paired with fresh field peas, rice, hen wings with gravy and fresh handmade biscuits.
It’s a food of love, family and connection. It’s a binder, the food itself being used in recipes to season (can’t have a good pot of beans without a piece of okra) and the meal being used to bring families together.
