I couldn’t think of any catastrophe, so I just thought of the changes that I’ve experienced when I moved from England to Canada with a French husband, and in Quebec, it’s kind of French culture, too, that happens. I have not witnessed changes in traditions because of a disaster, but when I got married and moved to Canada with my French husband, most of my English customs were set aside and replaced with customs from my new neighbors. In England, we made Christmas cakes and Christmas puddings on stir Sunday at the beginning of Advent. The whole family joined in, and everyone took turns to stir. I never did this in Canada. In England, Christmas decorations were put up on Christmas Eve with everyone helping, even visitors. In Canada, decorations start going up right after Halloween.
We did carol singing around houses, I haven’t done that here. We had stockings on children’s beds, I think we do that here too. Breakfast, and then opening gifts; we had lunch, which lasted until 3 o’clock in the afternoon. And then it was the Queen’s speech, which we all sat down and watched on the television. It’s not the same at all.
